Hey! So nice to speak with you! Can you tell our readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you originally from and where do you live now?

My name is Dr. Allen Sung. I'm a Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Huntington Psychological Services. I currently live and practice in the beautiful city of Pasadena, California. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, and my journey into psychology has been driven by a lifelong fascination with understanding the human mind and a deep desire to help others navigate life's complexities.

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now?

What I love most about Pasadena and the Los Angeles area is the vibrant community life. As someone who grew up locally, I have a deep appreciation for its character. It’s a wonderful place to live, work, and stay connected to my roots.

Tell us a little bit more about what your company does and how it started? How does it help your customers?

Huntington Psychological Services specializes in comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for children, teens, and adults. Our practice is founded on a single, guiding principle, developed during my near-decade as a Consultative Examiner for the California Department of Healthcare Services. In every case, I would ask: "Is this the level of care I would want for myself or my own loved ones?" That question remains our non-negotiable standard. We believe an evaluation must do more than just identify a diagnosis or label; it must deliver clarity, understanding, and a definitive path forward. We are committed to making the entire experience warm, collaborative, and empowering for every individual and family we serve.

What was one feedback from a happy customer/client that you won’t forget about?

A parent once told me, 'For the first time, I finally feel like I understand my child's struggles and we have a plan moving forward.' That has stuck with me because it perfectly captures our mission. Our goal is to help our patients, give them new information so they can make better informed decisions about their or their child's lives, and leave them feeling more hopeful about the future.

If someone wants to start a business, what's advice that will help them?

My advice is to establish core principles and values that guide every decision you make—your personal standard of excellence. For me, it has always been, "Is this the quality of work I would want for myself or my own family?" In the chaos of building a business, this kind of guiding question acts as your North Star. It helps you navigate difficult choices, ensures the integrity of your work, and builds a foundation of trust with your patients that becomes your strongest asset. It is also crucial to hire a team that shares your principles and values and develop a strong workplace culture.

Where do you see your company in the future?

I see Huntington Psychological Services continuing to be a leading provider of high-quality evaluations in the Pasadena and Los Angeles area. Additionally, we are currently in the process of moving into a larger office location to expand our services, which will include therapy. Beyond that, I am passionate about expanding our role in the community by fostering the next generation of psychologists. A significant part of our vision is to grow our mentorship programs, strengthening our ties with local schools to guide students who are passionate about the field of mental health.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

Focusing on my specialty of psychological evaluations, the biggest misconception is that it's a cold, impersonal process of simply labeling a person with a diagnosis. In reality, a quality evaluation is the exact opposite. It's a deeply human and collaborative process designed to uncover an individual's unique strengths and challenges. The goal isn't to put someone in a box, but to provide a comprehensive roadmap or "blueprint" for understanding, support, and growth. It's about replacing confusion with clarity and providing hope.

What has been one of your biggest struggle building your business and how did you deal with it?

One of the biggest struggles was balancing the roles of clinician and business owner. In graduate school, you learn to be a clinician, not an entrepreneur. I dealt with it by seeking mentorship and applying the same principles of lifelong learning to business that I apply to psychology. Building a business takes calculated risks and stepping out of our comfort zones, similar to what we try to teach our patients!

What was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?

I have so many favorite music artists from different eras, including Marvin Gaye, Bill Evans, Michael Jackson, Beach Boys, and Stevie Wonder. My favorite athlete was Michael Jordan and I grew up watching the Showtime Lakers and Tommy Lasorda's Dodgers.

Any shoutouts you want to make?

Absolutely. I want to give a big shoutout and recognize our truly amazing team at Huntington Psychological Services. They are the core of our practice and deserve all the credit for the incredible work we do in the community. I also want to give a shout out to our fellow mental health providers in the area. We are always open to collaboration, so please get in touch! And last but never least, thank you to my family and friends for their endless support.
