So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.
My name is Adrielle, I’m originally from California but I moved to NY about 8 years ago to a pursue my doctorate at Columbia University. Like many New Yorkers I thought If some people found a way to make it here, why not me?
Tell us one thing you love about where you live now?
I have to say the access to art. I feel like I’m in a relationship with the city and it always offers me access to art and experiences… I’ll never stop learning new things here.
Tell us a little bit more about what your company does and how it started? How does it help your customers?
I have a few businesses but I’m most excited about sharing my newest venture in tech, Collector’s Cödex. It stemmed from the Collector’s Club, building a community around intentional art spaces, serious collectors and getting to know living artists. Collector’s Cödex is an app that supports the development of confident collectors through art education, learning your taste and guiding you to available art experiences near you. Working first hand with artists and collectors I think it will be a link that grows the collector community.
If someone wants to start a business, what advice will help them?
Don’t stay stuck in ideation. Put something in g out there and don’t fixate on making it perfect, focus on making it exist.
What was one feedback from a happy customer/client that you won't forget about?
Wow I have received so many amazing messages and positive feedback. The best thing someone’s said is that I made them want to learn more. In a field that African American and indigenous peoples are underrepresented, to have someone share culture with me and say I made this world feel more inviting and intriguing is the biggest compliment.
Where do you see your company in the future?
The limits are endless. I would love to see it used as a daily app like Instagram or TikTok but something that guides us to learn and experience rather than hide behind a screen.
What is the biggest misconception about your industry?
Specifically in art & tech I believe that we perceive all automation and technology as a force meant to replace human craft and connection while I believe in order to compete with it, we must understand its limitations as well as turn it into a tool.
What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business and how did you deal with it?
Everyone thinks they don’t have enough money to collect or they don’t know any thing about art. I think the feeling of inferiority is embedded in the industry by design but it’s 100% untrue. Understanding art begins with trusting your gut and it’s more about your lens than saying the “right” thing. Additionally, money is relative. I bought many of my pieces on payment plans and my first piece was $100. It really can begin with a change of mindset.
What was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?
I grew up with an appreciation for classical music and jazz. Definitely Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven… much like visual art, it’s led by emotion and gives you room to think.
Where can our readers learn more about you and your company?
Definitely by following my substack : Art by Adrielle. I’m consistently writing current events in the art world and what my company is up to next
