So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.
HI there, everyone! So nice to be here! My name is Laura Wyman, originally from the suburbs of Harrisburg PA, I migrated west to spend 6 years in Cincinnati, OH and then 15 years in Los Angeles before coming back to suburbia on the East Coast in Bloomsburg, PA.
Tell us one thing you love about where you live now?
Bloomsburg is the perfect blend of a historic municipality meets college town. It is incredibly peaceful, and increasingly diverse. Both qualities lend themselves to a lovely little area for daily living.
Tell us a little bit more about what your company does and how it started? How does it help your customers?
We began with literally not much more than a hope and a dream in 2018. We saw a need for higher quality training that utilized our expansive experience as a former D1 scholarship athlete and a Nurse Practitioner. Blending those arenas, we quickly grew and expanded our services to include personal training and Wellness transformation packages. Our fitness facility has both in-person and full virtual capability for private training, small groups classes, sports performance and inclusive Wellness sessions. We strive to over-deliver an experience that increases each clients' overall health, strength and wellness spanning from youth developmental athletes to powerlifters to adaptive seniors.
Our recent implementation of our custom app has created a powerful umbrella where clients are able to track their health biometrics with device syncing (think Apple watch, Google Health apps, Garmin, etc) and monitoring, trend their progression data-points, enjoy easy access to customized nutritional guidance and meal plans, and more. We are huge proponents of open communication and dialogue. We insisted that unlimited in-app messaging be included to allow increased access for questions, addressing concerns, uploading educational information, etc. Our app has dramatically improved daily work-flow and functions, as well as client satisfaction. Such a great move!
If someone wants to start a business, what advice will help them?
Do it!!! Just go for it; stop overthinking and analyzing and waiting to be ready.
There is no such thing as the perfect time, and the very best action you can take may be messy. Messy action beats no action!
Seek reputable resources and establish a solid foundation within your state/region's legal framework.
Never doubt your ability to succeed - you absolutely can accomplish whatever it is that you believe! We're complete proof of starting from ground zero and creating a beautiful life that benefits others.
Stay true to your word without compromise. This is your character, integrity and ultimately the foundation of your entire business. The world needs more people willing to help make a difference, not revolve strategies around dollars. The dollars will come when your values and passion align with service.
What was one feedback from a happy customer/client that you won't forget about?
There truly are so many, but perhaps the quality of life indicators are my favorite. When people are no longer in pain, decrease and eliminate medications because their health has improved to the point of no longer needing them, mobility and mood improve, energy increases. These are such incredible wins for people!! We've had phenomenal transformations of weight loss, muscle mass increases, visceral fat percentages normalizing....we literally have the best jobs on the planet!
To hear that someone is no longer short of breath walking from the parking lot to their office, or that they no longer need pain medication for that aching knee that prevented them from hiking with their family is priceless!
Where do you see your company in the future?
We would love to expand to include daycare/child care facilities for busy families, a nutritious cafe, perhaps larger training spaces for youth athletes, sauna, etc.
We see continued customized delivery of plans that are co-created with clients to establish sustainable, lifelong success. The phrase "Wyman Trained" is already global, but we would love to continue to strengthen generations to come!
What is the biggest misconception about your industry?
Perhaps the biggest issue we encounter is that of rapid results as seen on social media. Not realizing that the reality of a photo shoot includes models, lighting, hair + makeup, etc, so many fall prey to a fictitious industry.
There are no quick fixes. The fads and gimmicks are sales tactics and ultimately sabotage mindset and metabolism; let's do better to raise the bar on standards, shall we?
What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business and how did you deal with it?
Everyone thinks they don’t have enough money to collect or they don’t know any thing about art. I think the feeling of inferiority is embedded in the industry by design but it’s 100% untrue. Understanding art begins with trusting your gut and it’s more about your lens than saying the “right” thing. Additionally, money is relative. I bought many of my pieces on payment plans and my first piece was $100. It really can begin with a change of mindset.
Any shoutouts you want to make?
Absolutely! The biggest shoutout to our clients and their families: they are literally our reason WHY, and motivate and inspire us daily. It is the highest of honors to be trusted in this manner, and we do hot take it lightly. Parents who carpool to make sure their children get from school to practice to gym and home are our heroes! Members who show up on days when they may not feel their best are exhibiting a level of commitment rarely seen today. Clients who began at square one and have progressed to the top of the podium in their chosen sport/event...wowwwwww! We are so blessed to witness these things!
Also, to our friends and family who constantly hear conversations centering around macros and training methos - we're sorry, not sorry!!!
