Founder Interview
Dr. Orletta Caldwell
Start with a real problem you know how to help solve. Do not get so caught up in the logo, website, or social media that you avoid the actual work of serving people. Be clear…

So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.
My name is Dr. Orletta E. Caldwell. I am originally from Detroit and am now based in Central Florida. I am a nonprofit leader, educator, and founder of Beyond Existing Enterprises. For more than 35 years, I have worked alongside organizations and leaders who are doing important community work, often with limited resources and a whole lot on their shoulders.
Tell us one thing you love about where you live now.
I love the sunshine and slower pace. After years of Michigan winters, I appreciate being able to step outside, breathe, and enjoy the day. I had a milestone birthday a couple of months ago. I knew I needed a change.
Tell us a little more about what your company does and how it started. How does it help your customers?
Beyond Existing Enterprises started because I kept seeing nonprofit founders, individuals who wanted to change their world and didn't have a clue. Most of all, they had received their 501(c)(3) and did not have a clue, or were full of myths, looking for next steps.
BEE guides primarily Black-led, grassroots, faith-based, and community-rooted nonprofits to build the foundation they need to operate well. That can mean board development, compliance, strategic planning, fundraising readiness, coaching, training, or interim leadership. My work helps leaders move from being overwhelmed and reactive to being clearer, more organized, and better prepared to sustain their mission.
If someone wants to start a business, what advice would you give them?
Start with a real problem you know how to help solve. Do not get so caught up in the logo, website, or social media that you avoid the actual work of serving people. Be clear about who you help, what they need, and what you can do well. Also, charge for your work. You can care deeply about people and still build a business that pays you properly.
What is one piece of feedback from a happy customer or client that you won't forget?
A friend once told me, “You don’t just give information. You love those you help.” That stayed with me because that is exactly how I feel.
Where do you see your company in the future?
I see Beyond Existing Enterprises continuing to grow as a trusted resource for nonprofit leaders who need practical, culturally informed support. I want the company to expand its coaching, training, interim leadership, and digital learning opportunities so more organizations can get the help they need without feeling like they have to figure it all out alone.
What is the biggest misconception about your industry?
The biggest misconception is that nonprofit work is just about having a good heart. A good heart matters, but it is not enough. Organizations still need strong governance, financial discipline, compliance systems, fundraising plans, and leadership. Passion without structure burns people out.
What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business, and how did you deal with it?
One of my biggest struggles has been learning to focus. I have many interests and have spent much of my career helping wherever there was a need. Building a business required me to get clearer about what I do best, say no to work that does not fit, and create services that are sustainable for both my clients and me.
Who was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?
Wynton Marsalis. I thought it was really cool that he played classical and jazz trumpet. I don't have a favorite athlete. I just love sports, especially college football and hockey.
Any shoutouts you want to make?
Shoutout to the nonprofit founders, community leaders, and women who keep showing up for people when the work is hard and the resources are thin. I see you, and I am honored to support the work.
