Founder Interview

Sydney Kessler

My biggest piece of advice is to believe in yourself enough to take the leap, even when you don't have everything figured out. Starting a business can be intimidating, and there…

So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.

My name is Sydney Kessler, and I’m the owner and founder of EMS Revolution, a mobile EMS personal training business based in Northern New Jersey. I’m originally from North Caldwell, NJ, and it’s exciting to be building a business in the area I grew up in while recently expanding into Hoboken and New York City.

I have a background in Exercise Science and have always been passionate about fitness, wellness, and helping people feel their best. My journey eventually led me to EMS training, where I found a way to combine my interest in exercise science with a more innovative and efficient approach to fitness. Through EMS Revolution, I bring personalized, technology-driven workouts directly to my clients, offering a convenient, one-on-one training experience that fits into their lifestyles.

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now.

One thing I love about living in Northern New Jersey is the sense of community. There’s something special about being able to build a business in an area you know and have connections to. I love that I can work with clients in the communities around me while continuing to grow and expand into new areas like Hoboken and New York City.

Tell us a little more about what your company does and how it started. How does it help your customers?

EMS Revolution is a mobile EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) personal training business that brings an innovative, technology-driven workout directly to clients in the comfort of their own homes. Rather than requiring clients to travel to a gym or studio, I provide a personalized, one-on-one training experience designed to fit their schedules, lifestyles, and individual fitness goals.

With my background in Exercise Science, I was drawn to EMS because it combines fitness, technology, and efficiency in a unique way. I began my career in the EMS industry in New York City, where I gained hands-on experience and saw firsthand how this approach to training could help people make the most of their time. That experience inspired me to take the next step and build something of my own.

I founded EMS Revolution to bring a more personalized, convenient, and elevated approach to fitness to Northern New Jersey, with a recent expansion into Hoboken and New York City. By bringing the equipment and training directly to clients, I eliminate the need for a gym commute and make it easier for busy people to prioritize their health.

What makes the business especially rewarding is being able to meet clients where they are, both literally and in their fitness journeys. Whether someone is looking to build strength, improve muscle tone, or establish a more consistent fitness routine, my goal is to make training more accessible, efficient, and personalized. EMS Revolution is built around the idea that fitness should work for your lifestyle, not the other way around.

If someone wants to start a business, what advice would you give them?

My biggest piece of advice is to believe in yourself enough to take the leap, even when you don't have everything figured out. Starting a business can be intimidating, and there will always be reasons to wait until you feel more ready, but sometimes you have to learn as you go. You won't have every answer in the beginning, and that's okay.

I'd also say to be patient with yourself and understand that building something takes time. It's easy to compare your progress to other people's success, especially with social media, but every business has its own timeline. Focus on creating something you genuinely believe in, providing real value to your customers, and building relationships along the way. You have to be willing to put in the work even when the results aren't immediate. Ultimately, you don't need to have everything figured out to get started; you just need to be willing to take that first step and keep showing up.

What is one piece of feedback from a happy customer or client that you won't forget?

One piece of feedback that has really stayed with me was from a client who told me that working with me had given them a level of confidence they had never experienced before. They shared that the experience hadn't just changed their body, but had positively impacted their life as a whole.

That meant so much to me because, while fitness results are exciting, the impact on someone's confidence and overall well-being is what makes this work truly rewarding. I started EMS Revolution because I wanted to help people reach their fitness goals, but hearing that I could make a difference beyond the physical results reminded me why I do what I do. If I can help someone feel stronger, more confident, and better about themselves in their everyday life, that's the kind of impact I'm most proud of.

Where do you see your company in the future?

I see EMS Revolution growing into a recognizable brand throughout New Jersey and New York City, with a team of highly trained professionals who share the same commitment to personalized service and quality. My long-term vision is to expand into multiple locations, build a team of trainers, and eventually open EMS Revolution studios where clients can experience our approach to training in a dedicated space.

I started the business with the goal of making fitness more convenient and accessible through a personalized, concierge-style experience, and I want to carry that same philosophy into every stage of growth. As the brand expands, I want to create something bigger than myself while maintaining the quality, attention to detail, and client relationships that EMS Revolution was built on. I'm excited about the possibilities and focused on building a strong foundation that will allow the business to grow sustainably over time.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about EMS training is that you can simply put on a suit, stand there, and let the technology do all the work. In reality, EMS is a training method that combines electrical muscle stimulation with intentional movement and guided exercises. The technology enhances the workout, but proper coaching, technique, and consistency are still essential.

Another misconception is that EMS is only for a certain type of person or fitness level. One of the things I love most about this industry is how adaptable it can be to different goals and lifestyles. Whether someone is just beginning their fitness journey or already has an established routine, training can be personalized to their individual needs. I think the more people understand what EMS actually involves, the more they'll recognize its potential as an effective addition to their fitness routine.

What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business, and how did you deal with it?

One of my biggest struggles has been learning how to build a business from the ground up while wearing so many different hats. As a solo business owner, I'm not just the trainer; I'm also responsible for marketing, building relationships, managing operations, and finding new ways to grow the business. It takes a lot of time, consistency, and belief in what you're building, especially in the early stages when you're working hard to get your name out there.

I've learned that growth doesn't always happen as quickly as you hope, and that can be challenging when you're so invested in something you've created. I've dealt with that by staying focused on my long-term vision, continuing to put myself and my business out there, and reminding myself why I started in the first place. I've also learned to celebrate the smaller milestones along the way instead of only focusing on how far I still want to go. Building EMS Revolution has taught me a lot about patience, resilience, and trusting the process, and I know those lessons will continue to shape me as an entrepreneur.

Who was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?

Billy Joel has always been my number one music artist. I've grown up loving his music, and he's remained a favorite of mine over the years. When it comes to athletes, Derek Jeter was one of my favorites growing up. Being from New Jersey, he was such an iconic figure in New York sports, and he's someone I've always admired.

Any shoutouts you want to make?

I'd love to give a shoutout to my family for their support and encouragement throughout this journey. Starting a business from the ground up takes a lot of hard work, patience, and belief in yourself, and having people in your corner makes a difference. I'm also incredibly grateful to my clients who have trusted me with their fitness journeys and helped EMS Revolution grow through their continued support and referrals. Every person who has supported the business in some way has played a part in getting it to where it is today, and I'm excited to see where we go from here.
