So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.

Tyler Turnquist.

I was raised in Denver, Colorado. After high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Army, graduated from the Defense Language Institute, and served as an Arabic-language interrogator. After my military service, I earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Utah.

While I was enrolled at the University, I was also working at a local ski resort (Wolf Mountain) to pay for my studies. I was working as an assistant to the Food & Beverage Director. I noticed that the ski resort was not tracking any revenue or expenses. So, I started putting together numbers just for all the restaurants, bars, and cafeterias on the mountain. When the owner of the resort saw that I was able to create Profit & Loss statements and other various reports for the Food & Beverage Dept, he asked me if I could do the same for the entire resort. The following year the owner sold the resort to North America’s largest ski company (American Ski Company). Within a couple years Wolf Mountain grew from one of the smallest ski resorts in Utah to the largest ski resort in Utah and was renamed The Canyons. I was promoted to the Accounting Manager position and oversaw an accounting team of about 10 people. I decided to change my studies and eventually obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

After many years of working in the accounting field both in Utah and California I decided to move back to Colorado and start my own accounting business.

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now?

I love living in Colorado, especially the town of Loveland. The mountains are so accessible, and the views never get tiring. My wife and I really enjoy getting outdoors, hiking, camping, motorcycling, and exploring all the fun mountain towns here in Colorado.

If someone wants to start a business, what advice will help them?

Choose the Right Business Structure The entity type you choose (sole proprietorship, LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, partnership) has major tax and liability implications.

Separate Personal and Business Finances Immediately Open a dedicated business bank account and credit card from the start. Commingling funds is one of the most common and costly mistakes new business owners make.

Set Up Bookkeeping from Day One Don't wait until tax season. Use accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero, Wave) from the very beginning. Clean books make everything easier: taxes, financing, selling the business later, and understanding your own profitability.

Build a Cash Flow Forecast Profit on paper doesn't mean cash in the bank. A business can be profitable and still run out of money. Model out your expected inflows and outflows for at least 6–12 months.

Don't Skip the CPA Relationship Hire a CPA early, not just at tax time. A good accountant helps with entity structuring, tax planning, and avoiding costly mistakes that are hard to unwind later. The fee is almost always worth it.

The overarching theme: the financial decisions made in the first 90 days of a business are often the hardest to undo. Getting them right upfront saves enormous time, money, and stress down the road.

What was one feedback from a happy customer/client that you won't forget about?

A recent comment I received from a client was that they are able to sleep at night knowing that all their bookkeeping needs are inorder. They are now able to focus on building their business and not having to worry about all the paperwork.

Where do you see your company in the future?

I see this company continuing to grow by acquiring new clients and new talented team members.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

When I mention that I have my own accounting & bookkeeping business, most people think of filing tax returns and are not aware of all the other functions of an accountant or bookkeeper

What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business and how did you deal with it?

Working with start-up companies can be very challenging because of cash flow issues, not having systems in place, and all the growing pains that come with start-ups. But this is also what makes it fun and interesting. Assisting the business owner by working through the growing pains and becoming successful is very rewarding.

Who was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?
