Founder Interview

Kristal Hall

Start, but be willing to become a student of your own business.

Kristal Hall, master cosmetologist, certified trichologist and founder of K. Hall Brands

So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.

Thank you! My name is Kristal Hall, and I’m a Maryland girl through and through. I was born and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and it’s also where I chose to build my career and businesses. My brick and mortar clinical-spa has been in Marlow Heights for over 20 years.

I’m a Mom, Entrepreneur, Master Cosmetologist, Certified Trichologist and Board Certified Drugless Practitioner, and the founder of K. Hall Brands, Glamourous Styles Hair Studio and Complete Hair Solutions. What started as a career behind the chair has evolved over more than two decades into work that sits at the intersection of beauty, hair and scalp health, wellness, education and entrepreneurship.

Today, a large part of my work focuses on helping people experiencing hair loss better understand what may be happening and what their options are. I’ve also expanded into product development, supplementation and wellness protocols, non-surgical hair replacement and education.

I think the common thread throughout my career has always been curiosity. I never wanted to simply know what to do, I wanted to understand why. That curiosity has continued to push me into new areas of education and ultimately shaped the entrepreneur I am today.

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now?

Location, location, location.

There is something special about building a business in the same area that helped shape you. I’ve served the DMV community for more than 20 years, and I've had the privilege of watching clients move through entire seasons of their lives. I've seen graduations, marriages, babies, career changes, health challenges and everything in between. Some relationships that started with a hair appointment years ago have grown into genuine friendships.

Prince George's County also has an incredible culture of entrepreneurship and creativity. There are so many talented people here building businesses and creating opportunities.

So when I think about where I live and work, I don't just think about geography. I think about community, relationships and roots. This community has supported me, and being able to continue serving it means a lot to me.

Tell us a little bit more about what your company does and how it started? How does it help your customers?

Glamourous Styles Hair Studio began as a traditional salon, and great hair care is still part of our foundation. But as my career progressed, I started seeing something that I couldn't ignore.

Clients weren't simply coming in wanting their hair styled anymore. They were saying, "My hair isn't growing like it used to," "My scalp is irritated," "My hair is getting thinner," or "I've been to several doctors and I still don't understand what's happening."

Those conversations changed the trajectory of my career.

I began studying trichology and expanding my education beyond traditional cosmetology. That eventually led to Complete Hair Solutions, where I work with clients experiencing different forms of hair loss and scalp concerns through comprehensive consultations, scalp analysis, testing when appropriate, in-clinic therapies, home-care protocols and collaboration with medical professionals when something requires medical evaluation.

From there, K. Hall Brands grew naturally. I wanted clients to have access to thoughtfully selected and developed products that could support the work we were already doing in the clinic and at home.

What I think makes our approach different is that we're not interested in simply covering up a problem. We ask questions. We look for patterns. We educate. And when something falls outside of my scope, I believe strongly in referring and collaborating with the appropriate medical professional.

Sometimes the most valuable thing I can give someone isn't a product or treatment. It's helping them understand their situation well enough to ask better questions and advocate for themselves.

If someone wants to start a business, what advice would you give them?

Start, but be willing to become a student of your own business.

People sometimes spend so much time trying to create the perfect logo, website, business plan or launch that they never actually begin. Your first version probably won't look anything like your business 10 years from now, and that's okay.

I also think entrepreneurs have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. There will be seasons when you're learning something completely new, making decisions without having every answer and realizing that something you've been doing for years no longer works.

Pay attention to your customers. Some of my best business decisions came from listening to what people kept asking me for.

Finally, don't confuse entrepreneurship with doing everything yourself. Learn your numbers, know your strengths, get help where you're weak and surround yourself with people who can tell you the truth.

Starting a business takes courage. Staying in business requires adaptability.

What was one feedback from a happy customer/client that you won't forget about?

There is one Google review that still touches me every time I read it.

A patient came to me after experiencing progressive hair loss for four years. She had seen several physicians but said she often left those appointments feeling dismissed and still didn't understand what was happening. A relative eventually introduced her to the concept of trichology, and after doing her own research, she found me.

She admitted that she came into our consultation skeptical because she was afraid it would be another disappointment.

Afterward, she wrote that for the first time she felt "seen and heard."

Those words stayed with me.

Through our consultation and the testing I recommended, we identified areas that warranted further investigation. She took that information back to her physicians, additional medical testing was ordered, and she later shared that the findings we had discussed were substantiated.

In her review she called the experience a "game changer" and said that she learned more about her hair loss during our appointment than she had learned over several years of searching for answers.

Of course, I'm grateful anytime someone says they love their hair or are pleased with their progress. But "I finally felt seen and heard" hit differently.

Hair loss can be incredibly emotional. People sometimes arrive frustrated, embarrassed, confused or exhausted from trying to find answers. That review reminded me that my responsibility isn't just to look at someone's scalp. It's to listen to the person sitting in front of me.

That's the kind of impact I want my work to have.

Where do you see your company in the future?

I see K. Hall Brands becoming much bigger than a physical location.

The salon will always be part of my story because it's where everything began, but the vision today is an ecosystem centered around healthy hair, scalp health, hair-loss education and wellness.

That includes expanding Complete Hair Solutions, continuing to develop our K. Hall Awaken products and targeted protocols, creating more educational resources, growing our media presence and finding ways to make credible hair-loss information accessible to people who may never physically sit in my chair.

I'm particularly interested in expanding how we serve clients remotely. There are people across the country who don't have access to a trichologist or multidisciplinary hair-loss resources in their immediate area. Technology and education give us an opportunity to close some of that gap while still recognizing when hands-on or medical care is necessary.

I'm also passionate about helping move the conversation around hair loss beyond simply asking, "What product should I use?"

The long-term goal is impact and scalability without losing the personal approach that built the company. Growth is exciting, but I never want K. Hall Brands to become so big that people stop feeling seen.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every hair problem is a hair-product problem.

It isn't.

Hair is incredibly good at telling a story. Changes in density, shedding, breakage or scalp health can sometimes be associated with styling practices, but they can also coincide with nutrition, inflammation, hormonal changes, medications, stress, lifestyle factors or underlying health concerns.

That's why buying another oil, shampoo or vitamin isn't automatically the answer.

There is also a misconception that cosmetology, trichology and dermatology have to compete with one another. I don't believe that at all. They have different scopes and can bring different pieces to the puzzle. Some of the best outcomes happen when professionals recognize the boundaries of their expertise and work together.

Hair loss is complex. There isn't always one cause and there certainly isn't one solution for everybody.

I think our industry serves people better when we're willing to say, "Let's figure out what we're actually dealing with before we start trying to fix it."

What has been one of your biggest struggle building your business and how did you deal with it?

One of my biggest struggles has been learning that the business that got me here isn't necessarily the business that will take me where I'm going next.

I've been an entrepreneur for more than 20 years. That's long enough to experience economic changes, industry shifts, social media, changing consumer behavior, rising costs, a pandemic and more than a few moments where the original plan had to go out the window.

At the same time, I've changed.

There were moments when I had to give myself permission to evolve beyond being known solely as a hairstylist or salon owner. I invested in education, moved deeper into trichology and hair restoration, incorporated wellness, began developing products and started thinking about K. Hall as a brand rather than simply a salon.

That kind of growth sounds exciting when you tell the story afterward. While you're living it, it can be uncomfortable.

I've dealt with it by staying teachable. I ask questions, invest in education, pay attention to what my clients need and try not to become so attached to one version of my business that I'm afraid to build the next one.

I've learned that longevity isn't about doing the same thing for 20 years. It's about knowing what should remain at your core while having the courage to change everything else that needs to change.

Who was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?

Oh, this takes me back! My favorite artist growing up was definitely Mary J. Blige.

She came along at exactly that time when music, hair, fashion and middle school were all intersecting for me. The popular urban magazines would have these full-page spreads featuring her hair, makeup and clothes, and we were paying attention to ALL of it. She had that smooth R&B sound but with an edge that made her different. Her style was part of the experience.

What a time in music! (Laughs.)

And since football season has started, I have to give an ode to my Dallas Cowboys. I've been a Cowboys fan since I was a little girl, and Michael Irvin was my favorite athlete.

As I got older and actually began understanding football—the positions, plays and strategy—I appreciated him even more. There was a confidence in the way he played and caught the ball, but I also loved the energy he brought to the people around him. His personality was infectious.

Even now, I enjoy listening to his commentary as an analyst. Once a Cowboys fan, always a Cowboys fan!

Any shoutouts you want to make?

My shoutout list could probably be a mile long! I've been blessed with supportive parents, cheering children, loyal clients, friends, mentors and people who have encouraged me through different seasons of my life and career.

But I would be remiss if I didn't specifically give flowers to my sister, Kimberly.

She has watched and cheered me on throughout my entire career. Every crazy idea I've brought to her—and trust me, there have been plenty—she somehow finds the sensible part of it and helps me see how I can make it work.

In more than 30 years, I can't remember a time when she snubbed an idea, made me feel ridiculous for dreaming bigger or required me to convince her that something was possible first. I've always been met with love, encouragement and full support.

Entrepreneurship can sometimes be lonely because you're carrying ideas that other people can't see yet. Having someone in your life who doesn't need the finished product before they believe in you is priceless.

So Kimberly absolutely gets her flowers.

And to my family, my clients and everyone who has trusted, referred, encouraged or supported me over the years—you are part of this story too.
